🌻 Yarn gifted from Symfonie yarns 🌻

KnitPro kindly gifted me their Mini Bouquet Knitting Needle set (review linked here) and a skein of their Symfonie Yarn Bella Worsted in sunshine ☀️The needle set is perfect for knitting collars and sleeves and so I figured let’s knit a scrunchie!

A quick (~2 hours) lacy project which is great for using scraps, giving as gifts and for scratching the ‘I need to finish something quick’ crafty itch.

Yarn required
Approx 30 g of worsted weight yarn - yarn used in the image is Symfonie Yarn Bella Worsted in sunshine.
I recommend using a spun yarn to prevent pilling when wearing. Superwash yarn is also a little stretchy which is ideal for scrunchies!

Needles
5 mm needles - I used the Mini Bouquet Knitting Needle set. If you’re not keen on using magic loop or DPNs, short needles and cords are really useful.

The lace pattern
The lace pattern is an eight-row repeat. For the size shown, the eight-row repeat is repeated three times for a total of 24 rows.
Where ** is shown, repeat these instructions until the end of the row.
Row 1 : Knit 1, *yarn over, knit 3 stitches together, yarn over, knit 1*
Row 2: Knit all stitches.
Row 3: Knit 1, *knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 2*
Row 4
: Knit all stitches
Row 5
: Knit 2 stitches together, *yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 3 stitches together* ending with yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 2 together.
Row 6: Knit all stitches
Row 7: Knit 1, *knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, yarn over* When you have 4 stitches remaining, knit these stitches.
Row 8: Knit all stitches

If you want a larger or smaller scrunchie, knit fewer or more rows. You need to end with a row where you knit all stitches.

Bobble diameter - approx 6 cm. You need to cast on ~ 10 stitches for every 1 cm diameter of your bobble. The lace stitch pattern is 4 stitches + 5 stitches so however many you cast on, you need to ensure it is divisible by 4 + 5.

Scrunchie pattern

Using circular 5 mm needles and the cable cast-on method, cast on 67 stitches. Join in the round.
Knit all the stitches for round 1.
Begin the eight row repeat for the lace pattern. Repeat this three times ending on row 8 of the repeat (knit all stitches).

You will now cast off by knitting together the stitches currently on your needles and the stitches from the cast off row whilst ensuring the bobble is placed within the knitting when you join these stitches together. The bobble will make casting off a little tricky as it will pull your knitting tight but this is what will make the scrunchie. At the beginning of the round, place your right-hand needle into the first cast-on stitch, wrap your yarn to knit and pull the stitch through both the picked up stitch and the first stitch of the row. Repeat for the second stitch of the round. Slip the first stitch over the second to cast off. Repeat for the round.

Tie off the yarn and sew in the ends.

Enjoy!
